The Decorated House ~ Valentine's Day Decorating - Roses - Mercury Glass - Heart Stones and Ex Voto

When you take a moment to look closely, you often see things that you miss in your daily running around at full speed. It wasn't really until only a few years ago that I noticed heart shaped beach stones, even though I grew up near the ocean and spent many wonderful hours there. For Valentine's Day especially I love bringing out this shadow box that shows off the Heart Stones along with a silver Ex Voto and an Antique Skeleton Key. It's on the entry table along with some roses, the Mercury glass heart, and one of the little silver crowns and another small silver heart. Sweet Hubby and I a very simple short vacation at the beach the year we found these, when all we did was walk the beach and swim and eat. Very boring stuff for most people today, but we thought is was perfect. During those long walks I began to notice how beautiful the shades of gray were in the shells and I as I started collecting a few for color and paint inspiration, I noticed the heart shaped stones. They remind me of the beach and a very happy time.  The pretty hearts on the entry table this year, reminding me to look for the heart in all, and to see with my heart, not just the eyes and brain.

The Decorated House ~ Valentine's Day Decorating with Mercury Glass, Antique Keys and a Rose
Mercury Glass Hearts,
Antique Skeleton Keys
and
a Simple Beautiful Rose

There always seems to be an abundance of beautiful roses for sale about this time each year. It may be that with trying to time roses to be in  the perfect pre-full bloom stage for Valentine's Day, growers have to stagger the bloom times and lots of roses are ready for market now! On the last trip to Costco's they had beautiful roses in bundles of 2 dozen for $17.  Personally I'd rather have a nice dinner or a special gift instead of sweet hubby spending a $100 more on rose delivered on Valentine's Day. The ones from Whole Foods are about the same price for 2 dozen, and so far they are holding about the same, and are opening up better.

Valentine's Day Decorating with Black and White ~ The Decorated House

Valentine's Day will be coming very quickly. Yes, I know,  we just got the Christmas decorations put away. And on our morning walks, there were still Christmas trees out by the curb to be recycled yet. But still another holiday will be here soon and that means there are so many people

~ Valentine's Mantel 2013 - The Decorated House

Rabu, 13 Februari 2013

Pink and gray with a touch of red and shiny silver and Mercury glass are the decorating colors for Valentine's Day here this year. The beautiful bougainvillea is blooming right now and it was tempting to bring it in for the mantel like last year.  But it sheds quite a bit and doesn't really last that long. So instead a simple hand made paper flower is in an antique glass bottle until

~ Ex Voto, Heart Beach Stones & Red Roses for Valentine's Day

Senin, 28 Januari 2013

I wrote about these pretty beach heart stones that we found at the beach a few years ago before. I was looking for beach stones and shells in colors to inspire the colors for decorating our home.   It seemed like it took a couple of years to find some pretty way to display the heart stone and keep them in sight to remind us of our love of the ocean and a wonderful little vacation. Finally I found the shadow box and added the antique key and the Ex Voto silver Heart. The white shadow box has stayed just like this, simply moved around sometimes.

Even at Christmas time red was a bit too bright for me.  But as the colors outside fade with the winter months, the red roses were a welcome treat to bring home. Even this early before Valentine's Day.

~ Valentine's Day Mantel Decorated

Jumat, 10 Februari 2012

This year the mantel is decorated for Valentine's Day with some of my art that I have used before, but this year I enlarged it to about 19 inch tall to fit in a frame that I just refinished. I took pictures of the frame before, and some step by step pictures to show you soon. It was an ugly worn out frame that most people might have put in the dumpster. Fortunately someone thought it was worthy of a place in a little antique - junk shop and there it waited I guess just for a person like me who looks for the old and unloved junk waiting for a new life. I love the way it turned out.

The frame was painted with Annie Sloan Chalk paint

~ Thinking of Weekend Projects & Some Relaxing

Kamis, 12 Januari 2012

As I'm thinking about a little decorating for Valentine's Day, I remembered a post about a beautiful set of dishes that now belong to my Sweet Daughter. So here is a little repeat of that one for you.
______________________________________________________
Most of my “old” blog friends have heard the story of how I turned down this beautiful set of red transferware dishes that had belonged to my husband’s grandmother. Not once or twice, but a few more than that. It was quite a while ago. No one in their family wanted them so we were given a chance to have them. Sometime later the set was offered to Sweet Daughter, years before she had her own home, and she happily accepted them. A few years after that, I was sorry I had turned them down. They are so pretty, so vintage, and so charming.
Johnson Bros. England, English Chippendale
I kept them for safekeeping for a several years and used them just like I owned them. By now I had come to appreciate them much better. So I thought maybe Sweet Daughter would forget about them or decide she didn't want some "old lady" dishes from so long ago. But when she bought her first home, she was quick to take some of the dishes to their new home. I still got to keep some. When she recently had a party, she needed a lot of dishes and the red transferware was called into duty.
It was rather interesting how many of the ladies oohed and aahed over those dishes. A few of them had been collecting the same dishes as well. But what they all loved best was the fact that the dishes had traveled through time and family. They had belonged to Sweet Daughter’s great grandmother and that was special to others. It’s a treasure whether you knew the relative or not to have a continuation of your family in your home.
Usually I bring out these lovely old dishes because the red is so perfect on Valentine's Day. This year I'll miss them except for the very few pieces I still have. Lesson learned.

I was in labor on Valentine’s Day many years ago, and so this weekend is Sweet Daughter’s Birthday Weekend! I’ll make a couple of large heart shaped chocolate chip cookies and something yummy for dinner on Sunday. On Monday we are playing girls’ day out and going to have a nice pedicure and do a little shopping. And I think puppy is going for a bit of grooming, too. I treasure these days so much.
Usually I bring out these lovely old dishes because the red is so perfect on Valentine's Day. This year I'll miss them. Lesson learned.
Hope your weekend is a wonderful one.
